Summary table for the antibiotic management of common conditions in primary care available now
A table summarising the antibiotic management of common conditions in primary care has been added to eTG complete and the Therapeutic Guidelines website. The team at Therapeutic Guidelines would like this document to reach a wide audience, particularly clinicians who do not have a subscription for eTG complete.
Dr Leigh-Anne Claase, Chief Executive Officer of Therapeutic Guidelines, said that the decision to distribute the resource widely reflected the pressing need for improved antimicrobial stewardship in primary care.
‘Antimicrobial resistance is a significant threat to global public health, and it will take a community effort to tackle it effectively. Therapeutic Guidelines is working with a number of national stakeholders, such as the RACGP and AMA, to raise awareness of the availability of the summary table.’
The summary table is taken from the recently updated Antibiotic Guidelines. It is designed to tackle over-prescription of antibiotics, but also to highlight the correct drug choice, dose and duration of therapy when antibiotic treatment is indicated. Drugs that are commonly overprescribed in primary care include amoxicillin+clavulanate, cefalexin, cefaclor, erythromycin, and roxithromycin.
The summary table can be downloaded here.
